Kati Rán returns with Unnr MINDBEACH

November 12, 2020 — On November 20, folk music multi-instrumentalist Kati Rán will release her latest single, “Unnr MINDBEACH”. Returning to the Nordic inspirations explored on 2018’s Blodbylgje, this new song once again teams the Dutch songstress with world-renowned black metal star Gaahl (Gaahls Wyrd, Gorgoroth) providing baritone vocal accompaniments to Rán’s own ethereal tones. Joining them are Icelandic musician Borgar Magnason (Sigurrós, Andrea Bocelli, Björk) on bass and cello string, Danish guitarist Harald Juul (Euzen), and additional vocal layers from Russian singer Yana Veva (Theodor Bastard).

“Unnr MINDBEACH” is ten minutes of delicate traditional folk set against a powerful, intertwined vocal choir, and draws inspiration from the rich history of skaldic tradition transposed against a modern and personalized interpretation of Old Norse poetry. In utilizing a combination of historical instruments such as the Swedish nyckelharpa and the Norwegian Kraviklyra witg modern string/ambient compositions, Rán creates a multi-national, historically idiosyncratic piece that bridges the evolution of Nordic folk compositions over centuries.

The fresh track continues Rán’s connection to the sublimity of nature, evoking the Icelandic landscapes that inspired it. Such is the expansive scope of Rán’s interpretation of Hugarland (meaning ‘Mindland’) — she simultaneously crafts a portrait of Iceland as an intimate, affecting landscape, but also something imbued with mythological properties, worthy of the hall of the gods. Production for “Unnr MINDBEACH” was split between Rán as part of 3Norns Productions in the Netherlands and Christopher Juul (Heilung) at Lava Studios in Denmark.

Kati Rán first embarked on an odyssey of Nordic folk inspiration after the disbandment of her previous folk group L.E.A.F. in 2015 (not to be confused with Dutch acoustic pop group ‘Leaf’ who disbanded in 2009). Working predominantly within Nordic languages (including Frisian) and utilizing historical instruments alongside modern innovations, Kati Rán has established herself as a true auteur in the Norse folk pantheon, working alongside established entities within both the worlds of heavy metal and wider Norse folk.

In addition, Rán has recently worked as a content consultant for Ubisoft’s Assassins Creed: Valhalla, and she has also been a guest musician on Danish artist Myrkur’s Folkesange Tour (as well as shows by Gaahls Wyrd.)

Kati Rán is currently working on a new record to follow up her 2018 EP Blodbylgje (available on her Bandcamp page.)
